About Etchwright: we are an independent research desk for laser engraving and sublimation gear. We exist for the moment between "I want a laser" and "which one", when the spec sheets get loud and the forums get louder. We cover engravers, enclosures, air assist, fume handling, rotary attachments, materials, and the sublimation side of the bench. Every guide compares the families and models that actually matter, scores the shortlist, and ends with a plain bottom line. By the end of any page you will know what fits you and why, or what to skip and why not. That is the whole job, and the whole reason this site exists.

The short version
Etchwright started with one question: why is every laser article either a press release or a forum argument? The two of us were shopping for a first engraver, kept a spreadsheet of contradictions between specs and owner reports, and realized the niche had room for somebody who just did the homework and wrote it down straight. That somebody turned out to be us.
We are writers and researchers, not a test lab. Nothing on this site claims hands-on testing, and no product photo will ever pretend otherwise. Charts, tables, and sourced figures only. What we do well is the unglamorous part: reading the spec sheets, checking the fine print, and comparing the numbers side by side so the difference between machines is visible instead of vibes.
What we do
- We compile. Public spec sheets, manufacturer guidance, and standard practice for the niche, pulled into one place. No more nine tabs open.
- We compare. Wattage, optics, work area, airflow needs, software paths, and the material limits that decide what a machine can actually make. The numbers do the arguing.
- We frame money honestly. Budget, mid range, and premium tiers with relative framing, because a price written today is a rumor by Friday. We point at searches, not fake "best price" deep links.
- We update. Model lines change constantly in this niche. Guides carry publish and update dates, and when a line shifts we recheck the comparison. The guides get revised, not abandoned.
What we will not do
- No testing theater. We never imply hands-on results we did not produce. If we had the machines, we would tell you.
- No paid placements. Brands cannot buy a slot, a score, or a verdict. The ranking is the research, and the research is the product.
- No medical, financial, or safety advice. Laser safety matters, which is why we describe what enclosures, air assist, and fume extraction do and who they fit. You decide with your own risk tolerance and local rules.
- No stale price bait. You will not see digits that go stale, and you will not be herded to a single listing. Searches show you the market, not our favorite link.
How this site is funded
Some of the links we publish go to Amazon searches, and if you buy through them we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That income funds the research time. If a brand could buy the top of a guide, this site would not exist, because the top of the guide is the point.
BeamScore™: how picks get scored
BeamScore™ is our proprietary 1 to 7 rating for the machines and classes we shortlist. You see it on scored picks inside the buying guides and on the homepage cards: a gold number out of 7, always labeled BeamScore™. It is a spec-derived class rating, not a lab result, and we say so every time we show it.
Every scored pick is rated across five dimensions, each on a 1 to 5 scale:
- Cutting ceiling: how thick and how fast the class cuts the materials in its lane. Diodes cut thin, CO2 cuts deep.
- Engraving speed: how quickly the class finishes typical surface work. Speed is a feature you feel on every job.
- Work envelope: the usable bed and what fits on it, flat or on a rotary. Bigger is not always better, but small is always limiting.
- Software and ecosystem: how easy the machine is to drive, and whether the brand supports it well. Frustration is a tax.
- Air and safety fit: how naturally the class pairs with enclosures, air assist, and fume handling. The boring gear that keeps you making.
The five dimension scores are averaged, rescaled to the 7 point scale, and rounded to the nearest whole number. Scores come from published specifications, standard guidance, and the weight of owner consensus in the community. Specs change, and scores change with them; the caveat is printed under every scorecard.
A 7 out of 7 does not mean "perfect for you". It means the class nails what its guide says it should do. A perfect score on the wrong job is still the wrong machine.
Corrections and contact
We get things wrong sometimes, and when we do, we fix it fast and say so. The niche moves quickly and new model lines land constantly. If a spec looks off or a class deserves a second look, tell us at hello@etchwright.shop. These guides are a living document, and readers are part of the revision process.
