Laser engraving materials choose your machine more than any spec sheet does. Wood engraves on nearly any laser, clear acrylic cuts on CO2, and coated metal marks best with a diode. Wood, acrylic, leather, glass, stone, and coated metal are the families that matter, so read the material first.

The Material Families

Wood

Wood is the friendliest material in laser land. Maple, birch, basswood, and walnut engrave with rich contrast on both families, and soft woods cut on CO2 with ease. Start here. End here often. If in doubt, begin with maple or basswood.

Acrylic

Acrylic is the CO2 star and the diode wall. Clear cast acrylic cuts clean on CO2 and mostly ignores diode beams. Diode owners: admire it from a distance. The diode wall is real, and knowing it saves money.

Leather

Natural leather engraves beautifully on both families, with a toasted edge that smells like victory. Faux leather is a gamble, and treated leather can fume. Veg tan is the reliable friend.

Glass and stone

Glass and stone engrave white and frosted on both families, often with a little help from a marking spray or a wet paper towel trick. They do not cut. They mark, and marking is enough.

Coated metal

Dark coated metal is diode territory: tumblers, bottles, and tags mark with crisp contrast. Bare shiny metal needs a fiber laser or a marking spray. Know your coating, know your machine.
